Murshid [Zee 5]
Murshid is a series centered around a notorious gangster, Murshid Pathan, who once ruled Mumbai’s underworld during the 70s and 80s. Forced out of retirement due to a threat to his family, the show aptly carries his name, as the entire 7-part series hinges on the compelling presence of Kay Kay Menon. The narrative shifts between Murshid Pathan’s vibrant criminal past, where he was a merciless enforcer in Mumbai's smuggling era, and his present life as a quiet, reformed man trying to atone for his past by engaging in charity work and community building.
The plot intensifies when Murshid discovers that his younger son is entangled in a dangerous situation involving his old adversary, Farid, played brilliantly by Zakir Hussain. The interactions between Menon and Hussain are a highlight of the series, showcasing a delicate balance between subtle performances and powerful dialogue. Tanuj Virwani portrays Kumar Prathap, Murshid’s adopted son and a police officer, though he only truly stands out in scenes shared with Menon. Unfortunately, other characters and elements of the series are less memorable.
One notable creative choice in Murshid is the restrained use of violence and gore, which is often a staple in crime dramas. Instead, the show relies on Menon’s nuanced acting and sharp writing to deliver its tension and drama. Although there are moments of violence, they are cleverly conveyed through dialogue rather than explicit action, adding depth without relying on brutality. It takes about two episodes for the series to fully capture the viewer's interest, so patience is needed to get through the initial setup. However, episodes 5 and 6 are particularly engaging, as the story gains momentum and the stakes rise. While Murshid has its flaws, Kay Kay Menon’s performance elevates the series, making it a worthwhile watch. Without him, the show would be a much different experience.
