Tamil Nadu Government to Establish AI Labs in Chennai, Collaborates With Google on AI Projects

On Saturday, the Tamil Nadu government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Google aimed at advancing technological development and fostering innovation. This collaboration will focus on critical areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), startup support, skill development, and enhancing the industrial ecosystem to create scalable and impactful AI solutions. The MoU was signed at Google’s Mountain View office in California, with Chief Minister MK Stalin in attendance during his two-week visit to the US to attract investments. Industries Minister TRB Rajaa, who was also present, highlighted that the partnership would explore significant AI initiatives under the Tamil Nadu AI Labs.

“This partnership with Google marks a significant leap towards establishing Tamil Nadu as a hub for AI and advanced electronics manufacturing,” Rajaa stated. He also emphasized the state’s commitment to training 2 million youth in cutting-edge AI skills through the flagship "Naan Mudhalvan" initiative, preparing them for future opportunities.

Amit Zavery, Head of Platform at Google Cloud, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We’re excited to work together to build a thriving AI ecosystem in Tamil Nadu, one that fosters innovation, creates opportunities, and equips individuals with the skills needed to succeed in the digital age.”

The Tamil Nadu delegation also discussed expanding the production of Pixel 8 phones and other Google products in the state. Google’s statement revealed plans to collaborate on key areas such as manufacturing, skill development, education, and supporting MSMEs and the rural economy. During the visit, Chief Minister Stalin also met with leaders at Apple and Microsoft to explore further opportunities, including the expansion of data center infrastructure and the establishment of a Global Capability Centre in Tamil Nadu.

Reflecting on his visit, Chief Minister Stalin described the meetings at Apple, Google, and Microsoft as “awe-inspiring,” and reiterated his determination to strengthen these partnerships to make Tamil Nadu a leading growth engine in Asia. On Friday, Stalin also participated in an investors’ conclave in San Francisco, where MoUs worth ₹900 crore were signed with six companies.
